Employer 'for' correctement


For ne s'emploie pas pour exprimer le but sauf si vous l'employez devant un nom.

Il s'agit d'une erreur couramment commise par certains francophones, qui ont tendance à traduire systématiquement 'for' par 'pour'.

Ainsi, si on est allé au restaurant pour manger un bon repas, on dira :

We went to the restaurant for a delicious meal.


Mais, avec un verbe, vous emploierez une proposition infinitive comme dans cet exemple :

We went to the restaurant to have a delicious meal.


For s'emploie avec un verbe en -ing si cela concerne l'utilisation normale de l'objet :

It is a spoon for eating soup.

(L'usage de la cuillère est bien défini.)

C'est une cuillère pour manger de la soupe.


It is an armchair for relaxing.

(L'usage du fauteuil est bien défini.)

C'est un fauteuil pour se relaxer.


For s'emploie très souvent avec certaines tournures :

It is important for me to pass that exam.
Il est important que je réussisse cet examen.

It is important for her not to miss her train.
Il est important qu'elle ne rate pas son train.



It is unusual for him to get angry.
Il est inhabituel qu'il s'énerve.

It is usual for them to get up late on Sundays.
Il est habituel qu'ils se lèvent tard le dimanche.



It is difficult for her to learn French.
Il lui est difficile d'apprendre le français.

It is easy for him to travel all around the world, he has a lot of money.
Il lui est facile de voyager dans le monde entier, il a beaucoup d'argent.



It is too early for them to go to bed.
Il est trop tôt pour qu'ils aillent se coucher.

It is not late enough for them to go to bed.
Il n'est pas assez tard pour qu'ils aillent se coucher.



They arranged for him to meet Jane.
Ils ont fait en sorte qu'il rencontre Jane.

She arranged for her son to go to the USA.
Elle a fait en sorte que son fils aille aux USA.



Have you got something for me to drink?
Est-ce que tu as quelque chose à boire pour moi ?

There is not anything for her to do in the office !
Il n'y a rien à faire pour elle dans le bureau !

There is nothing for me to eat.
Il n'y a rien que je puisse manger.
